Well im a bit late with this as International day of happiness was Yesterday. But I think happiness should spread to every day.
I consider my self a "happy chappy" a "glass half full" kinda person. There is so much to be unhappy about in this world War, famine, disaster, that pair of jeans not fitting any more ect ect. But lets not dwell on that, instead lets look at whats good in this world. I know good news is hard to find in the papers. Imagine the impact on sales if The Sun was full of "Man saves cat from neigbours pear tree" stories . Bad news sells papers! its as simple as that. Is it our morbid fasination? , Does reading how terrible other people's lives are make us feel better about our own?
So what makes you happy? For me its the simple things like spending time chatting with mates in the pub, days out with family, or maybe someone giving me a compliment. What about food? this makes me happy (until I step on the scales). Nothing like creating a meal and inviting mates over for a catch up and a munch up. Im a big beliver of comfort food as a cure for the blues.
Then we have music. Life would be sad without it. Music gives our life rhythm. It sets the pace of life, with out realising it we find our selves dancing in the street or singing along to that song on our ipod not realising that no one else can hear the music, they can just hear us singing. Ive been on hold on the phone before now, singing along to the on hold music, not realising the call has been answered, and im now serenading a call centre guy. Ive seen people jigging about to music as they do stuff like use a cash machine or do the house work. Yes music makes the unbearable bearable. Music can transport us to a happy time in life, maybe that song played at a wedding, or the song being played in Poundworld when you met the love of your life down the dog food ailse and are now more than just pedigree chums? Everyone has a song they use to cheer themselves up. If I'm feeling down I will listen to something like SClub 7 "Bring it all Back". Instant feel good factor right there!! As I write this post; ironicly the Pharal Williams Happy has just come on the radio. What are the odds of that? (quite high with the rotation of songs on UK radio, not getting into that one today though)
I also get a great deal of happiness when helping others. whether its putting a coin in a collection tin, or just generally doing something nice for someone. Good deads do the heart good!. I love my voluntary role at Radio Wey, presenting requests for people in hospital, helping to cheer them up. Now I also get to help people through my job for a learning disability charity, giving me ultimate job satisfaction!
Then we have the weather. Oh yes, us Brits love to talk about it and moan about it too. Sorry to continue this sterotype but if I end up spending a rainy day being blown about the sea front at Brighton, eating soggy fish and chips, I'm not going to be happy am I? . Take away the rain, replace with sunshine and it becomes the most enjoyable experience. I think the sun makes us all happy. I feel a sense of depression falling over me when the clocks go back in October. Suddenly its dark ridiculously early. I always feel very out of sync and drained on the Sunday after the clocks go back. There was a time when I went to work in the dark at 7am and returnened home in the dark at 5pm. How depressing is that we need some day light to survive, the only light I was getting at Tescos was artificly bright lights, which gave me a headache. Maybe it was a ploy to claw back my wages in sales of parcetamol 16p a time? So clocks go back I feel sad and depressed. Of course the opposite occurs when the clocks go forward in spring. I feel energised and happy. Life is best served with sunshine.
So a belated happy International day of happiness to you! Stay happy now!
