It's 21st October 2015 today which is the day Marti Mcfly traveled to in the second Back to the Future movie. its kind of odd thinking back in 1985 he was traveling 30 years to the future, and that his future is soon to be in our past.
Back in 1985 the world was more of an offline place a place where people spoke to each other, enjoyed each others company rather than spending hours buried in a world of xbox and talking to people you've never acualy met. People weren't walking into lamp posts, neglecting their surroundings in favour of surfing the Internet on the phone. Yup the world was a simpler place back then, well it was for me as at this point 30 years ago I would have been like 3 and 3/4 years old. Sat in front of a big boxy TV watching Play School with images of Big Ted and Little Ted being beamed into the room in front of my very eyes. My brother would have just turned 1 and I think I was accusing him of eating the top of my bus or something along those lines. Sadly Life as a 33 and 3/4 year old sadly isn't so easy.
As a child, the year 2000 seemed like another world in fact 2000 was the year i was to become an adult.Thoughts of flying cars filled my head I was imagining living like the space age family in the Jetsons. I thought that the days of long car journeys would be over we would teleport our selves to our destination. Then came 1st Jan 2000.... It exactly the same as any other day. No big bang, no flying cars, no giant hologram sharks to attack us, the world was just normal with a few gadgets to make our lives easy.
Who would have thought that by 2015 we would be such unsocial creatures wrapped up in our technology, sending our kids face book messages to say dinners ready, following a computerised voice on our Tom Tom as we drive off the edge of a cliff "coz that's what the sat nav said". Could anybody forsee the 2015 human waving at a sensor to male to loo flush? or doing a little dance when the automatic light sensor sends the room to darkness? Welcome to the real 2015!
I wonder what Marti would make of the real 2015? I Imagine him arriving in that car, nobody paying any attention as they are too busy face timing their partner who is away in France or something. Marti would need to prize them away from their mobiles and then would probably be greeted by a grunt from a teenager who doesn't do real face to face contact. Then Marti goes into Tesco express and tries to ponder what a club card is and what is this contact less payment.
"Where is the music shop?" asks Marti "well they have all closed but you can download music from Itunes" I imagine he would be so confused by this point. At least records are on the comeback so he could buy a lp to take back with him and introduce 1985 to One Direction. Heaven forbid!! Oh Marti, if you expect that jacket to self dry it ain't gonna happen! You can't even get an app for that..and no an Ipad isn't something you wear on your eye.
I wonder if I need to give Marti my shopping list to buy me some food from 1985? he can pop it over next time he's passing 2015. Would 1985 bread go off If it's traveled through time? I Googled (no Marti that's not an illness, it's how us folk in 2015 find out stuff) anyway Google told me the price of stuff back in 1985. The Google prices are from 1985 and I'm using my rough estimate on today's prices. I spend a lot of time in supermarkets.
A large loaf of bread 33p (67p saving)
12 eggs 72p (£1.28 saving)
1kg sugar 47p (probably about 10p saving?)
Pint of milk 23p (if you buy one pint now your probably looking at 42p average so that's a increase of 19p.)
Newspaper (Daily Mirror) 18p (increase of 42p.)
So if Marti did my shop for me in 1985 I could save just under £3 Wonder how much delivery would be?
Fancy a 20 inch big boxy colour TV to watch Back to the Future on? That would cost you £225 in 1985. Now days you could pick that up for proably half that. a Washing machine would be £230, about the same as 2015 price. I guess the 1985 washing machine would be easier to use too. I have a mate who has a washer controlled by an app. So confusing!
Marti would do well to remember his postage stamps for any postcards he plans to send during his trip. In 1985 first class postage was 17p,
second class was 13p. Back then of course there was none of this large letter extra cost nonsense.
I might pop back to 1985 for a quick pint , 75p a pint is the stuff of dreams right! oh and if I like it in 1985 and want to but a terraced home in Gorse Hill (no idea where that is, but sounds nice) it would set me back £20 thousand. Heres and idea, we go back to 1985, buy lots of houses and then come back to 2015. Housing crisis solved!
Oh and before Marti goes back to 1985 he will need to fill the car up with gas! Yes you have to do it your self still but be prepared to be shocked by the price. A far cry from 1985's £2.04 A GALLON!!! Where did I put that time machine? Let's go back to the future!!
Happy back to the future day folks!
