So i popped into my local ASDA last night as i wanted to get chicken for a curryvin planning to make. I was hoping there would be chicken on the reduced section.
When making curry and similar dishes, I tend to buy a 500g pack of frozen chicken breast, let it defrost and chop it up. these bags of chicken are £1.97 with the 1kg bags at £5. (that works over £1 per KG more than snaller bags) Its not always cheaper to buy big packs! Disaster the 500g bags had sold old!! I did find a bag of chicken and veg mix for £1 which worked out a bargain so grabbed one of them.
Then to the various reduced aisles. I think I was too early for the final reductions but thought 50p for six large eggs was a good deal. I then had a wonder about and saw the fruit and veg woman reducing stuff to 10p. there were around 30 bags of peppers with their yellow tickets on. I thought I would grab a bag or two but was blocked by a woman customer in front of the shelf as her mate loaded the whole lot into a trolley. I then asked the reducing lady in the chilled section if the eggs and other bits are going down again. She said yes but she has to remove it all from shelf and put tickets on out the back otherwise she will be mobbed. We had a chat about this and she said she sees the same old faces night after night pushing out trolley loads of fruit and veg and fresh food thats been reduced to clear. Reducing lady recons they are all shop or resturant owners and use the products in their own buisness to push up profits.
Now from Asda's point of view they want to shift the stuff so probably not no bothered who buys it. What about for the shop owners ect who are bulk buying reduced stuff? well I can see exactly why they do it,It cuts their costs and maximises profits. It makes sense ecomomicly I get that, I wouldnt be too happy paying for these products knowing where they came from but, as they say ignorence is bliss right?
With all this poverty about what about the single mum who could use a few reduced peppers in a stir fry for tea to feed her family? or the little old lady who could use a small bag of reduced apples? Moraly I think supermarkets need to put a stop to people emptying shelves of reduced items that clearly arent for personal use. I think a limit should be put in place no more than 10 of same item if reduced? That way everybody gets a chance to get a deal. I have seen people pushing each other out the way, clambering to get reduced stuff in supermarkets. At the end of the day Im not going to loose a limb over a reduced lettece, I just walk away and let them fight it out.
I used to work in retail I was the one doing the 10p reduced stuff. At Christmas one year. I was mobbed, pushed up against a wall with cue cumbers and mangos shoved in my face, shouts of reduce this, reduce that. It really brings out the worst in human nature when those yellow tickets come out. I had to be called out the back for my own safety. One woman asked "can you reduce my melons?" I smiled and said she "needs to see a doctor about that one love".
Here is a top tip for you. Be nice to the reducing lady (or man)! I was and it got results! She was happy to reduce the eggs to 10p and I got 10p chicken as well before she got too mobbed.
